Who We Are
police.jpgCub Scout Pack 910 is chartered through St. Paul's Church, with scouts from many different religious organizations. Our scouts (Grades 1 through 5) are drawn from several local public and private schools. The "Pack" is composed of "dens" of same-grade boys. We have dens of "Tiger" cubs (1st grade), "Wolf" Cubs (2nd grade), "Bear" Cubs (3rd grade), and first- and second-year Webelos Scouts ("WE'll BE LOyal Scouts"). Many of our meetings are held at St. Paul's at 520 Summit Street in the West End. Dens meet twice monthly, usually from 4-5 p.m. on Sundays. Once each month, all dens gather, at the same time, in our large "Pack Meeting".

St. Paul's reactivated Cub Scout Pack 910 in 2001 with 35 scouts but two years later the group had grown to more than 50 boys. The national Cub Scouting program was formed as a part of Boy Scouts of America in 1930 and seeks to develop and foster caring, nurturing relationships between boys ages 7- 11 and their parents, adult leaders, and friends. Cub Scouting at St. Paul's has nine purposes:

  • To positively influence character development and encourage spiritual growth
  • To help boys develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship
  • To encourage good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body
  • To improve understanding within the family
  • To strengthen boys' ability to get along with other boys and respect other people
  • To foster a sense of personal achievement by helping boys develop new interests and skills
  • To show how to be helpful and do one's best
  • To provide fun and exciting new things to do
  • To prepare boys to become Boy Scouts

With St. Paul's as our sponsoring "Chartered Organization", Cub Pack 910 now has more than 20 volunteer adult leaders from inside and outside the Parish. In December 2002, we graduated our first den of Webelos II Scouts into Troop 910 of the Boy Scouts of America, also sponsored by St. Paul's and led by Bill Orr. Although a majority of the scouts come from St. Paul's families, many are not affiliated with the church, and Pack 910 thus provides both outreach and membership opportunities for the Parish.

Pack 910's dens meet twice monthly, usually from 4-5 p.m. on Sunday afternoons. During this time, they workd to learn the principles of scouting, to explore and learn about the world around them, to learn the value of service to others, and to earn badges and other achievements and recognition. Once each month, the various dens also gathered in a large "Pack Meeting" led by our cubmaster, where special programs were offered. Our scouts experience, many for the first time, nature walks in the local community and camping outings at Camp Raven Knob, the campground near Mt. Airy that scouts from our Old Hickory Council regularly attend. Our boys experience ice skating as well as snow skiing, and bicycle and fire safety courses. Many of our boys also attend summer day camp, which provide them with new adventures (and their parents with a break!) during summer vacation. In February, Pack 910's boys set out racing and building wooden Pinewood Derby cars, and St. Paul's honored them by hosting the annual "Blue and Gold Banquet."

The adult leaders for Pack 910 are most proud of our cubs for two efforts they undertook during this school year. Pack 910's participation in the national scouting Popcorn Sale fundraiser was critical to the success of our program. Unlike other youth fundraisers, this sale showed the boys that they were direct recipients of their sales efforts, and they were encouraged to knock on doors themselves, which helped these boys with manners, public speaking, and self-confidence. The scouts surprised us all by tremendous success in keeping the Pack financially sound.

In 2006, David Rosario took over the helm as Cubmaster from Jack Smith and continues to guide Pack 910 to great heights!.
